"Something New York" at DKNY for Spring 2012

DKNY is an experience that our editors look forward to every season for a number of palpable reasons. Perhaps it’s because year after year, Donna Karan plays host to her collections at the same venue, and we relish seeing how she transforms the massive space time and time again; or, perhaps it’s because no other label breathes the life of New York City onto the runway, and into a woman’s wardrobe the way that DKNY so successfully does. As the lights turned down, and the music chimed in, it was safe to assume that much like myself, the audience was thinking, “Okay, Donna: Show us something New York...” And did she ever.
Appropriately patriotic (the show took place on the 10th Anniversary of 9/11), DKNY opened with a series of red, white and blue options – slip dresses, wedges, long fitting blazers, free-flowing frocks fit for the humidity that comes with a typical East Coast summertime, and wide-brimmed hats worthy of an Audrey Hepburn flick. One of the most iconic symbols of a New York City fashionista was the yellow taxicab placed in the backdrop of each and every look that the designer sent down the runway. The models made their entrance from outside the venue, stepping onto the catwalk and only showered in the camera flashbulbs once indoors.
This spring, Karan allows for a fantastic transition between solid colors and two dominating prints – florals and stripes. The nature of this collection – fun, easy, and an “I’m ready for anything” sort of attitude, makes DKNY one of our favorite shows this season. [See Gallery Below]
